Box Falls and Dixie Valley (again)

What an awesome day and to share it with the best group of cachers out there.

Thanks to Abeyoni, Geo-Jeepers, geospyder, LostInReno, NVGreenGecko, and jimmyreno, this had to have been the funnest caching trip I've had in awhile. I love these group outings where it's like a mass assult on the caches unlucky enough to get in our way.

The picture shows all of us doing John's famous line "We're Burning Daylight!"

Another trip out to Dixie Valley, this time with a bunch of folks who had never been out to the great slot canyon save for geo-jeepers. Everyone was very impressed, and we had so much fun working our way up into the canyon. Abe even tried to get up onto the fifth level - though even he was unable to stretch himself that high.

We hit a bunch of other caches and I even got eight new caches, one up a steep ridgeline that offered a wonderful view of the whole valley. Then we went back up to the site of the helicopter crash and I managed to remember where it was we were supposed to go even after several years passing since I had found it. Off-set caches are so fun... not! And I managed to remember where the cache was at the pond that was over 400 feet off from the posted coordinates.

It was a great day, and we managed to grab dinner before I headed back for a well-deserved rest.

Cachers Anonymous Reno Chapter 911

First meeting of geocachers without an event!!

Today was the first time in a LONG time that I've had Friday off - so the chance to go up and hang out with a bunch of cachers after work was far too tempting to pass up. We were talking about it on the GBES and NGA forums, and tonight is the night. Both b0neZ and I were able to make this one and we hung out and had a great time with LostInReno, moonchaser, NVGreenGecko, Nexus-Wanderer, and geospyder.

Course, to prove our addiction to caching, we had to pick up two new ones on the way up. Unfortunately, for us anyway, both new ones were insanely close to CharliePop's business, so we scored only STF's. But on the second cache, a blue Jeep rolled by us at a mere 5 MPH clip and running along side full speed ahead was a bouncing bundle of white fluff. Hilarity insued as both of us cracked up over this tiny puff of a dog trying its little best to keep up with the Jeep (or pass the Jeep - we couldn't tell, we were laughing too hard).

Then, today (Easter) I got the bug to go hide some new caches. So, Carsonites, you'll have 7 new caches once RoadRunner gets off his lazy feathered butt and pushes the button. ((Kidding, RR, you know we love you!))

The Gates

They call the wind Mariah

And so was the theme today!

I'd originally scheduled today to head out hiking with Mama Gravy, candy corn, geospyder, and Nicole. Sadly - candy corn had obligations, spyder needed to be home, and didn't hear back from Nicole - so it was another glorious Girly Day for Ms. Gravy and Me.

We started with Randalh's Austere Academy, a clever clever puzzle cache - of which Randy is excellent at - and after a few tinkering, we managed to get the correct coordinates to the final stage and viola! One found cache. Continuing up the hill, we bagged another cache that I'd always thought was higher up the hill than it turned out to be, but we got there quickly and with few stops.

Unfortunately, the wind was biting cold and my ears were stinging - plus I wasn't feeling too hot myself - so we headed back down to the truck and proceeded to grab some urbans that were down on this end of Reno. A few clever ones, a couple that Gravy hadn't found yet, and a string of Safe1's brought my total up to twelve today. Not too bad with it being as cold as it was.

Today I continue training, though Mike it picking things up very well. I'm positive by the end of the week he'll be sailing through the closing shift. He's enjoying it and I wish him the best.

Quickie before Class

I made an appointment to be at the High Tech Center at noon - which the teacher said should be alright. But, I wanted to get the project started and b0neZ was heading to bed, so I dropped in at 11am.

Oh yeah, the High School is still in session - and they were using Pod 5 so I had to wait until noon anyway. So I went caching.

There's two caches at the south end of Washoe Valley that I've been staring at for awhile, today I decided to get them (something about cleaning up the nearest 5 miles to me). Both were easy to find, and took less than a half hour for both. The biggest adventure was tromping through the sagebrush on the way to the second because, while I'm happy to pay State Park fees if I'm actually using the park, it seems silly to shell out cash I don't have for a 5 minute visit. So, I walked.

Later at class, sailed through the mid-term and got to work on the project. We're mapping out incidents of crime over the last several years using the UCR provided by the Sheriff's Office. But, I found that I can't add records and then put a dot on the map - need to do it the other way around. Course, between the years of 2003 and 2007, there's several thousand. So I started investigating "Geocoding" - assigning a lat/lon to a physical street address. The teacher told me that we'll be doing that next semester - I countered with the project was due *this* semester.

I love the internet - found a site that I can load ALL my addresses into and it'll spit out the coordinates.

Take that!!

See? Pretty!!

Have you ever given a two weeks notice - with the only reason being one specific issue - but as each day progresses, you begin to see more and more reasons why its a good idea to leave? Things you won't miss, in fact will be glad to never have in your life again?

The constant noise from the slots, the endless smoke, the same thing day after day. And the people! Now, don't get me wrong, I love helping customers. I really enjoy being able to HELP, especially those who genuinely are seeking help. But gamblers are a different issue - for a gambler, they expect you to just stand silent to their nonstop abuse of being the personification of the casino. I know none of it is personal, but it wears you down as its never-ending.

What am I on? 9 days - 8 of which I know I'll be working and training.

9 days... I can make it.

My "home" for 7 years.

Carson Cleanup

Since today I was coming in to talk with my Boss about my notice - and since I didn't know how that was going to be -I decided to do something fun beforehand.

There's a small pile of caches building up around here that I haven't had a chance to get out to yet, so why not today? Made a little loop out of it and scored four little containers. One was a stroll out into Riverview Park, the other three urbans that are quick grabs once you learn the style.

Now I have three left within 5 miles, one I can get to tomorrow (maybe), the other is the multi I have yet to get the final for (and will probably get to it in May once the gates open now that I know you can drive to it), and the third temporarily disabled due to a muggling (this is the one at the waterfall).

I like seeing a big gaping hole of caches right here. It is a good accomplishment.

A bit of side news

Dad sent me an email this morning - but when I didn't respond he called. There's an immediate opening for a courier at his office. Was I interested?

Went down there, DMV printout in hand, and inquired about the position. They handed me an application and I sat down to fill it out.

Finished writing my first name down when the manager came over. Was I interested? Yeah... It's yours!

I GOT A JOB!!!

:happy dance::
